ALGERIA’s president, Mr Abdelaziz Bouteflika, inaugurated two extensions of the Algiers metro on April 10, adding five more stations to the network.

The opening of the 1.7km two-station extension from Tafourah Grande Poste to Place des Martyrs and the 3.6km three-station branch from Haï El Badr to Ain Naadja takes the total length of the network to 18km with 16 stations.

According to Algeria’s minister of public works and transport Mr Abdelghani Zalene, the two extensions will boost daily ridership to around 300,000.

The network is expected to reach 40km by 2021 with the opening of the Place des Martyrs - Bab el Oud, Ain Naadja - Baraki, and El Harrach - Houari Boumdiene International Airport extensions.
