ITALY’s new right-wing coalition government of the Five Star Movement and the League parties, which came into office on June 1, is starting to turn its attention to rail transport. The government’s first significant act affecting the railways was taken on July 25 by Mr Danilo Toninelli, minister of infrastructure and transport who belongs to the Five Star Movement, when he signed a decree to dismiss the entire board of directors of Italian State Railways (FS), including CEO, Mr Renato Mazzoncini.

Italy’s minister of infrastructure and transport, Mr Graziano Delrio, explains to Marco Chiandoni how the government is pressing ahead with its rail investment programme.

Italy funds Calabrian rail projects

ITALY’s minister of transport and infrastructure Mr Graziano Delrio has approved funding of €214m for the purchase of 22 mainline trains, five regional trains and seven CAF Urbos LRVs for Calabria.

FS privatisation - bridging the gap

Trenitalia to order up to 500 new trains

TRENITALIA has issued a tender for framework contracts to supply up to 500 regional multiple units in what looks set to be one of Italy's largest orders for new rolling stock in 30 years.

New Italy – Austria regional services launched
